| Here's my response to a thread on yarb.ca ...
There was a positive energy in the city that no one had ever seen before. Ear to ear grins on the hoards of people crowding the streets. The happiness was well beyond just happiness over a sporting event.
It was so beautiful.
We came together to celebrate life and joy and freedom. And we showed the world just how much we love living in our beautiful city. I can't impress upon you enough the amazingness of it.
I believe, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that it was worth it... For the spiritual boost it gave us-- you cannot put a pricetag on that!! This boost will give us confidence in every area of our lives. We know we can do more. We know we can be better. We know the people around us support us. Having faith in our future is what allows us to dream and create and ultimately produce. The trickle down effect is perhaps not too easy to see financially.
What happened after Expo 86? The boom that followed brought us the best the world could offer in so many things... Beautiful architecture, world class restaurants... A much more cosmopolitan city.
If you are only looking for immediate gains, you won't see much.. But the big picture will become evident over the next 15 years.
Sorry you didn't get to experience what I did.. I'm hoping it's not just a once in a lifetime event.. To feel that energy again in my life would be so wonderful!
